Meet Lakshya Scholar Shaik Khadarunnisa

Not every important decision is made with certainty. Some begin as a quiet promise, made in a difficult moment, that only reveals its full meaning years later. For Shaik Khadarunnisa, the decision to become a doctor began in Class 8, after watching her grandmother battle cancer. She did not fully understand the science behind the disease then, but she knew she wanted to understand illness, healing, and the human body better. That early resolve has guided every important decision she has made since.

Born and raised in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Khadarunnisa is now pursuing the second year of her MBBS at Guntur Medical College. Her journey to medical school is not defined by extraordinary opportunities but by consistent effort, discipline, and the determination to make the most of the limited resources available to her.

She completed her Class 12 with an outstanding 98%, reflecting years of focused study and hard work. Yet, academic excellence alone did not make the path to medical school easy. Her family had already taken a bank loan to finance her schooling and support her preparation for the highly competitive NEET examination. The financial burden meant there was little room for delay or second chances. Taking a gap year for additional coaching was simply not an option.

Understanding these realities, Khadarunnisa approached NEET with complete commitment. She cleared the examination in her very first attempt with an excellent score. Her performance was strong enough to make admission to AIIMS Mangalagiri a real possibility. However, the disruption caused by the 2024 NEET paper leak and the resulting changes in rankings meant she narrowly missed securing a seat there. While it was a disappointing outcome, she chose not to dwell on what could have been. Instead, she accepted admission to Guntur Medical College, one of Andhra Pradesh’s most respected government medical institutions, and moved forward with the same determination that had brought her this far.

Behind her achievements stands a family that has quietly sacrificed to keep her education alive. Her father is the family’s sole earning member, working as a roadside foodstall vendor. His daily earnings are unpredictable, and rising raw material prices and shortages of LPG cylinders have made running the small food business even more difficult, reducing both sales and income. Her mother is a homemaker, and her elderly grandparents depended on her father for their daily needs. As the only child in the family, Khadarunnisa has grown up acutely aware of the financial pressures her parents shoulder.

The family is still repaying the loan taken for her education, making every semester another financial challenge.  Every educational expense depended almost entirely on her father’s uncertain daily earnings.

Despite these challenges, Khadarunnisa has remained deeply committed to her studies. Among all her medical subjects, biochemistry and pathology fascinate her the most because they reveal the intricate processes that explain health and disease. Outside academics, she enjoys reading novels, particularly dystopian fiction such as The Hunger Games, drawn to its portrayal of individuals who must rely on sharp instinct and resourcefulness to survive circumstances stacked against them, and who find the courage to challenge unjust systems rather than simply accept them.
