Darshan M. Doddamani did not grow up surrounded by doctors, hospitals, or people with professional degrees. He grew up in a farming family in Hanagal, Karnataka, where education was valued deeply because it represented possibility. In his village, higher education was uncommon, healthcare facilities were limited, and opportunities often depended as much on determination as on circumstance. Yet it was in this environment that Darshan quietly began building a future that would eventually lead him to one of Karnataka’s premier medical colleges.
His educational journey changed when, after completing Class 5 in his village school, he qualified for admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Haveri. For a child from a modest farming family, the residential school opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed. Studying there free of cost until Class 12 gave him access to quality education, supportive teachers, and an environment that encouraged curiosity.
Science quickly became more than just another subject. Darshan enjoyed conducting science experiments, solving mathematics problems, and understanding how things worked. Those years gradually transformed an academic interest into a clear ambition, to study medicine.
His family never had abundant financial resources, but they had unwavering faith in education. His father supports the family through farming on their own land, cultivating crops such as maize, jowar, chilli, and watermelon. His mother manages the household, while his younger sister is currently pursing her undergraduate education. Like many farming families, their income depends heavily on seasonal conditions, making long-term educational expenses difficult to manage. Even so, Darshan’s parents continued encouraging him to pursue his goals.
The realities of village life shaped his father’s dream of seeing his son become a doctor. In their area, access to medical care was limited, and there was only one doctor serving the surrounding communities. For Darshan, however, this aspiration became deeply personal after losing his grandfather to a cardiac arrest. He still remembers trying to perform CPR, hoping he could somehow save him. Despite his efforts, his grandfather could not be revived. That experience left a lasting impression as it reinforced something he had already begun to understand: timely medical care can determine whether a family returns home together or with an irreplaceable loss.
After Class 12, Darshan earned a place in the Dakshana Foundation scholarship programme, which enabled him to spend a dedicated year at its Pune campus preparing for NEET. The opportunity allowed him to focus entirely on his studies without placing additional financial pressure on his family. His disciplined preparation resulted in him earning admission to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute to pursue an MBBS degree.
Alongside academics, Darshan enjoyed participating in sports throughout school, including volleyball, cricket, kabaddi, and kho-kho. He also took part in drawing competitions, activities that helped him develop teamwork, patience, and discipline outside the classroom. Today, as a first-year MBBS student, he is beginning to participate in community-oriented activities and hopes to contribute to blood donation drives and medical camps during his medical education. He believes that becoming a doctor involves serving people beyond the walls of a hospital.
Looking ahead, Darshan hopes to specialise in cardiology. More importantly, he wants to return to the region where he grew up and improve access to affordable healthcare. His long-term vision is to establish a hospital that provides quality primary and cardiac care so that families in nearby villages do not have to travel long distances for basic medical treatment.
The Shiksha Sankalp Society Lakshya Scholarship is helping make that journey possible. By easing the financial burden of medical education, the scholarship allows Darshan to remain focused on becoming the kind of doctor his community needs. Darshan’s story is of steady effort, opportunities earned through merit, and a young man who has never forgotten the place that shaped him, or the people he hopes to serve when he returns.
