Originally from Mollarpur in West Bengal, Arghya grew up in a modest family where education has always been valued, even when financial resources have been limited. His father works as a contractual employee in a textile factory, earning just enough to support the household, while his mother manages the home. His younger sister is studying at a government school, and like many middle-class families, every educational expense requires careful planning.
Arghya himself studied in a government school, where the fees were affordable, making it possible for him to focus on his studies without placing an additional financial burden on his family. His hard work paid off when he scored impressive grades in CUET exams, earning admission to the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at Banaras Hindu University, one of India’s most respected institutions for agricultural education.
Moving from West Bengal to Varanasi brought with it new opportunities, but also new responsibilities. Living away from home means managing rent, daily living expenses, and academic costs – all of which place additional pressure on a family already stretched by limited income. For Arghya, pursuing higher education has required not only academic dedication but also an awareness of the sacrifices his parents continue to make.
Despite these challenges, he has embraced university life with enthusiasm. Outside the classroom, he actively participates in badminton and enjoys taking part in cultural programmes, particularly dance. These activities have helped him build friendships, stay physically active, and find balance alongside the demands of his studies. During quieter moments, he enjoys reading detective novels, appreciating the curiosity and logical thinking that such stories encourage.
Academically, Arghya has discovered a genuine interest in soil science. He finds it fascinating that understanding the health of soil can directly influence crop productivity and food security. Learning how soil fertility can be improved has strengthened his appreciation of agriculture as both a science and a practical solution to real-world challenges. As his course progresses, he is especially looking forward to studying plant breeding and genetic improvement, subjects that have the potential to make agriculture more productive, resilient, and sustainable.
His decision to study agriculture was guided by careful thought rather than chance. He sees the field offering diverse opportunities – from public service through organisations such as NABARD to agricultural business management and even entrepreneurship. While his immediate goal is to prepare for a government career after graduation, he also understands that agriculture is evolving rapidly and presents multiple avenues to contribute to rural development and India’s food systems.

The scholarship allows Arghya to devote greater attention to his studies without constantly worrying about meeting educational and living expenses.
