Rahul Biswas's Story
Meet Shiksha Sankalp Scholar Rahul Biswas
There are students who follow straight lines, moving from one milestone to another without disruption. Then there are students like Rahul Biswas, whose journey is shaped just as much by movement as by stillness, by responsibility as much as aspiration.
Rahul grew up between two very different versions of home. His family is originally from West Bengal, but most of his formative years were spent in Delhi, where he studied at the School of Excellence. Delhi brought exposure, competition, and opportunity. West Bengal, where his family returned after he completed school, brought a reminder of roots, community, and the realities that come with limited means. Rahul has learned to carry both worlds without favouring one over the other.
Today, Rahul is pursuing the flagship 5-year BS-MS dual degree at IISER Berhampur, one of seven premier institutions established by the Government of India to advance science education and research. It is not just a prestigious program for him. It is a promise he has made to himself and to his family. With two younger sisters looking up to him and a household supported by a modest grocery shop, Rahul feels the weight of expectations every day.
At IISER, Rahul’s curiosity has found room to grow. He is deeply drawn to mathematics and hopes to explore research that sits at the intersection of analytical thinking and real-world decision-making. What sets Rahul apart is not his zeal or outward ambition; it is the way he plans quietly, with precision. He knows that studying at IISER is a privilege, but he also knows that privilege comes with responsibility. He intends to take up paid internships to cover his personal expenses. He has already mapped out the next stage of his academic life, which will involve pursuing an M.Tech in Data Analytics or AI and Machine Learning. His long-term vision leads him toward the financial services sector, where he hopes to merge analytical thinking with practical impact. For him, earning is not just about independence; it is about easing the load his parents have carried for years.
Campus life has also become a place where Rahul contributes beyond academics. As a core member of the team that coordinates IISER Berhampur’s annual cultural event, he has learned how to work under pressure, communicate clearly, and bring people together. Through the Nakshatra Astronomy Club’s outreach programme, he and his peers conduct workshops for students from nearby schools, showing children simple but exciting science experiments. For Rahul, these sessions are never just demonstrations; they are reminders of what science can spark in a young mind.
For Rahul, the Shiksha Sankalp Lakshya Scholarship is not a finish line. It is a moment of validation in a journey that is often exhausting but never aimless. It acknowledges the discipline behind his choices, the weight behind his plans, and the reality that talent and effort do not always have equal opportunities.
Rahul’s story is not dramatic, but it is deeply textured, shaped by geography, responsibility, and a quiet determination to move forward without forgetting where he comes from.
