At Miranda House, where young women arrive carrying dreams big enough to challenge the world, first-year BA Elementary Education student Veronica Singh is quietly carving out a path of her own. Her journey to this classroom did not begin with privilege or certainty, but with a belief she held long before she could articulate it: that education has the power to change the course of a life.
Veronica was born in a small town in Bihar, but her mother moved the family to Delhi in search of better schooling for her daughters. Money was scarce. Opportunity even scarcer. Yet Veronica’s world opened in the corridors of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, where a scholarship supported her studies from Class 6 to 12. There, she discovered not only the joy of learning but also the teachers who shaped her, guided her, and, unknowingly, inspired her future.
Unlike many around her, Veronica never viewed teaching as a fallback option. She admired the quiet leadership of her teachers, the way students paid attention, the trust in that relationship, and the possibility of shaping young minds. It was clear to her early on that she wanted to stand on the other side of the classroom one day. This clarity drove her to follow a disciplined study routine and eventually earn a place at the prestigious Miranda House, even when relatives and neighbours warned her that the financial burden would be too heavy.
Today, Veronica attends college lectures in the morning and tutors young children in the evening to manage her personal expenses. Her long-term goal is to complete her Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) training and eventually become a humanities teacher for higher grades. But she is also practical. Life has been unpredictable, and she has learned not to depend on a single path. As a backup, she is preparing for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) – Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff Examination, a national-level recruitment exam to recruit for Group C, non-gazetted, non-ministerial posts in various central government departments. It is not her dream, but it offers stability, and for Veronica, stability is not something she takes lightly.
At home, Veronica’s reality remains challenging. After her father passed away, her mother, with limited education, took up work as an ASHA worker to keep the family afloat. With a younger sister still studying, every rupee is stretched thin between fees, travel costs, books, medical expenses, and household needs. The fear of having to give up her dreams is something she carries silently.
This is why the Shiksha Sankalp Lakshya Scholarship means more to Veronica than financial relief. It is an affirmation that her persistence matters, that her aspirations deserve space, and that her journey, though quiet and often uncertain, is seen.
What Veronica wants most is simple: a life where she can stand on her own feet, ensure her younger sister studies without the interruptions she faced, and give her mother the rest she has never had. She does not want to be remembered as someone who finished college only to be hurried into marriage because there were no other options. She wants to build her own identity and become a teacher who not only instructs but transforms.
In every sense, Veronica embodies what this scholarship stands for: determination, dignity, and the courage to pursue education against all odds. Her story is still unfolding, but she is already lighting the way for many others who dare to believe that education can rewrite their future.
